IndiGo and Go First Ground Over 50 Planes Due to Pratt & Whitney Engine Woes Amid Supply Chain Challenges.
The ongoing engine issues with Pratt & Whitney have caused over 50 planes belonging to IndiGo and Go First to be grounded. This has resulted in the airlines exploring various options, such as wet leasing of aircraft and slowing down redeliveries through lease extensions to minimise disruptions. The companies are also considering re-induction of aircraft into their fleet and evaluating wet lease options within the regulatory guidelines. In addition, there is a thought of changing the engine supplier for its next order to overcome the persistent problems with P&W engines, according to a senior official at one of the budget carriers, speaking on the condition of anonymity to PTI.
Responding to the grounding, a spokesperson for Pratt & Whitney stated that it expects the pressures to begin easing later this year, but did not provide details on the number of impacted aircraft. The supply chain challenges faced by the industry have been exacerbated by the pandemic, resulting in a shortage of spare parts and skilled workers. In addition, the rising fuel costs and increased competition have added to the challenges faced by the Indian aviation sector, which is already reeling under a massive debt burden. The grounding of planes is likely to have a significant impact on the airlines’ operations, affecting their revenue and causing inconvenience to passengers.
